iMessage Phone Number Grayed Out After Switching Carriers

If your number cannot be selected in iMessage after a carrier switch, separate active service from Apple number verification before deleting an eSIM or resetting the phone.

Quick answer

Check that the transferred number belongs to an active SIM or eSIM, then inspect Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive. Test ordinary calls and SMS separately. Follow Apple’s activation steps once, allow the stated verification window, and contact the carrier or Apple with the exact remaining failure.

A working mobile-data connection does not by itself mean your phone number is activated for iMessage. If the number is grayed out or has no checkmark after a carrier switch, check the active line and Apple’s number-verification state separately.

This guide addresses an unavailable sending number in iMessage. It does not cover every undelivered message or an entire phone showing SOS.

Confirm which number the active line actually has

Ask someone to call the number you moved, then test an ordinary outgoing call and carrier SMS. Do not use an iMessage as the SMS test. Tell the new carrier if the old phone still receives calls or the new line still uses a temporary number.

Apple requires an active SIM or eSIM associated with the number to set it up in Messages. Keep the current eSIM intact while the carrier checks a pending transfer or an incorrect line assignment.

Write down which tests pass. Calls, data, SMS, and Apple messaging are different observations; “the phone works” hides useful evidence.

Inspect the unavailable number in Messages

Open Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive. Check whether the intended number is missing, unchecked and unselectable, or accompanied by a spinning verification indicator.

Confirm iMessage is on and that you are using the intended Apple Account. If the iPhone number works but is missing only on a Mac or iPad, follow Apple’s same-account setup for that device instead of changing the carrier line again.

Keep existing conversations. Starting from an email address while the number is unavailable can create separate threads; it does not repair phone-number verification.

Run activation checks once, then allow verification

Apple’s activation guidance calls for a working internet connection, current iOS, and the correct time zone. Number activation needs SMS, which the carrier may charge for.

Follow the official restart sequence once: turn off iMessage and FaceTime, restart the iPhone, then turn them back on. In the specific iOS 26 case where an eSIM was added after initial setup, Apple also identifies switching iMessage off and back on as the activation step.

Apple allows up to 24 hours for carrier verification after its troubleshooting steps. A spinning indicator means verification is being attempted; repeated toggling is unnecessary. That window does not make an unfinished carrier transfer complete.

Choose the next support question from the failed test

If calls or SMS fail, contact the carrier about the transferred number, line activation, and international SMS capability. If the line works but Apple’s activation remains unresolved after the stated window, use Apple’s official help for the exact activation or account error.

When a number remains unselectable across Apple devices, Apple’s number-setup article provides an account sign-out and sign-in sequence. Read that sequence before changing every device; do not erase the phone or delete its SIM as a substitute.

Keep the error wording, start time, iOS version, transferred-number status, and test results. Share account details only with official support.

Verify the sending identity, not just delivery

Completion means the intended number can be selected in Messages. Send a new iMessage to a trusted contact and have them confirm it arrives from that number.

A blue message sent from your email proves an email-based iMessage worked. An ordinary SMS proves the carrier’s messaging path worked. Neither alone proves that Apple activated your transferred number.

Do not call 911 as a service test, delete message history, or repeatedly reset network settings while the unresolved issue is number verification.
