Connect the iPhone to power and reliable Wi-Fi, back it up, verify available storage, and match the exact message before deleting only the downloaded update file.
Start with a backup, power, and a stable Wi-Fi connection. An iPhone can fail to update because the release does not support that model, storage is too low, the update server cannot be reached, the download is incomplete, or installation is still progressing slowly. The exact on-screen message determines the next move.
If the update is missing or cannot be checked
Open Settings > General > Software Update and compare the iPhone model with Apple’s supported-device list for that release. A beta or organization-management profile can change which release appears; do not remove a company profile without administrator approval.
If the message says the iPhone cannot check for or verify an update, confirm that ordinary websites load. Turn off a personal VPN or filtering app temporarily, complete any public Wi-Fi sign-in page, and try a different reliable Wi-Fi network. Check Apple’s System Status rather than repeatedly deleting data during a service outage.
If there is not enough storage
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Remove downloads you can replace, offload unused apps, and verify that photos or documents have completed their intended backup before deleting them. Do not give an Apple Account password to a “cleaner” utility.
If iOS offers to remove apps temporarily to complete the update, read the prompt carefully. Keep enough charge and do not start another large download while the update is being prepared.
Delete only a failed update download
When a downloaded update repeatedly fails verification or preparation, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage, select the iOS update, and tap Delete Update. Restart the phone, return to Software Update, and download a fresh copy. If no iOS update appears in the storage list, there is no file there to delete.
During installation, the Apple logo progress bar can move very slowly. Leave the phone connected to power. If it remains unresponsive for an unusually long period, follow Apple’s model-specific restart or recovery instructions; do not keep interrupting a bar that is still advancing.
Update with a computer when Wi-Fi installation fails
Use Finder on a current Mac or the current Apple Devices/iTunes software on Windows. Connect with a data-capable cable, select the iPhone, and choose Check for Update. Choose Update, not Restore, when trying to preserve data. Restore can erase the device.

Frequently asked questions
Will deleting the update erase my personal data?
Deleting the downloaded iOS package does not itself erase the phone. A restore is different and may erase data, which is why a current backup matters.
Why is the progress bar barely moving?
Preparation and installation times vary with the update and the amount of data. Keep power connected and judge whether the bar is still moving before forcing a restart.
