Visual Voicemail Not Working After Switching Carriers

Find out whether the new carrier mailbox, call forwarding, or the phone's visual list failed—and what to ask the carrier to reprovision.

Quick answer

First call the new carrier's voicemail inbox. If callers cannot leave a message or you cannot reach a mailbox, the carrier must set up or reprovision voicemail. If the mailbox works but messages do not appear visually, restart the phone, test with the new carrier's data connection, finish Visual Voicemail setup, and leave a new test message.

After a carrier switch, “voicemail is not working” can describe three different failures: callers cannot reach a mailbox, you cannot call the mailbox, or the mailbox works but its messages do not appear in the visual list. Test those functions separately before resetting the phone.

Do not assume the old carrier’s mailbox, greeting, password, or saved messages will move with the phone number. T-Mobile explicitly recommends backing up voicemail before a number transfer and says its mailbox resets after the port completes.

Confirm the carrier switch is complete

Voicemail depends on a working phone line and a mailbox provisioned by the new carrier. Before changing voicemail settings:

  1. Make an outgoing call.
  2. Ask someone to call your transferred number.
  3. Confirm that your old or temporary number is not receiving those calls.
  4. Check the new carrier’s number-transfer status.

If calls still reach the old phone, a temporary number, or an error message, finish the number transfer first. If the new phone shows SOS or has no service, use the new iPhone SOS transfer checklist before troubleshooting the voicemail screen.

Test the mailbox without the visual list

The first useful test is whether the carrier mailbox itself exists.

From the new phone, press and hold 1 in the Phone app or use the new carrier’s official voicemail access method. Then:

  • If you hear setup prompts, create the new mailbox password and greeting.
  • If you reach your greeting and can listen to messages, the mailbox works; focus on Visual Voicemail sync.
  • If the call fails, reaches the wrong mailbox, or says no mailbox exists, contact the new carrier to provision or reset voicemail.

Next, ask another phone to call your number and leave a short test message. Do not use an old message as the only test—the previous carrier may have stored it in a mailbox that is no longer attached to the number.

Set up Visual Voicemail again

On iPhone, Visual Voicemail appears in the Phone app rather than a separate carrier app. Apple says voicemail features are available only with supported carriers and plans.

Open the Phone app:

  • In the classic layout, tap Voicemail.
  • In the unified layout, use the filter control and select Voicemails.
  • If setup appears, create the password and greeting.
  • If a greeting editor appears, choose the default greeting or record a new one.

The exact layout can change with iOS. The important result is a working mailbox and a newly created test message appearing in the list.

On Android, the visual mailbox may be inside the Phone app or a carrier Visual Voicemail app. Use the app named by the new carrier for your device. Do not install a voicemail APK or configuration file from an unofficial site.

Test the data path

Visual Voicemail needs a network path to download message information. If the carrier mailbox works but the list stays empty:

  1. Restart the phone.
  2. Confirm cellular data works by turning Wi-Fi off and opening a webpage.
  3. Leave a new test message and wait for it to appear.
  4. Update the phone’s operating system.
  5. Check notification permission for Phone or the carrier voicemail app.

T-Mobile’s current iPhone troubleshooting specifically tells users to call the mailbox, leave a new message, turn Wi-Fi off so the phone uses the T-Mobile network, restart, and update iOS.

If cellular data also failed after the switch, fix that first with the carrier-switch data checklist.

Distinguish Visual Voicemail from Live Voicemail

On iPhone, these names do not mean the same thing:

  • Carrier voicemail stores missed-call messages with the wireless carrier.
  • Visual Voicemail shows supported carrier messages as a selectable list in the Phone app.
  • Live Voicemail creates a real-time transcription on the iPhone while a caller is leaving a message.

Apple notes that if an iPhone is off or outside carrier range, the call goes to carrier voicemail when that service is available. T-Mobile also warns that some of its Voicemail to Text features may not be compatible with iPhone Live Voicemail.

Changing the Live Voicemail switch is not a substitute for provisioning the new carrier mailbox. If the carrier inbox itself is missing, contact the carrier.

Check call forwarding and mailbox capacity

If unanswered calls ring indefinitely or go somewhere unexpected, call forwarding may be sending them away from the new carrier mailbox. Use the carrier’s troubleshooting instructions before entering forwarding codes from a forum; the correct voicemail destination differs by provider.

Also check whether the mailbox is full. Verizon and T-Mobile both list a full mailbox as a reason callers may be unable to leave new messages. Delete only messages you no longer need and save important recordings first.

For iPhone, do not follow Android instructions that say to clear the Visual Voicemail app’s storage. Verizon notes that iPhone Visual Voicemail is built into the Phone app. Android app-reset instructions do not apply to it.

Use the correct carrier path

The new carrier controls the mailbox attached to the transferred number:

  • AT&T: AT&T says a new mailbox must be set up within 60 days of activation. On iPhone, open Phone, choose Voicemail, select Set Up, and follow the password and greeting prompts.
  • T-Mobile: Confirm the mailbox is set up, test a new message over the T-Mobile data network, and use T-Mobile’s voicemail troubleshooting path if it does not sync.
  • Verizon: iPhone Visual Voicemail is in the Phone app. Verizon also allows mailbox access by dialing *86; if the mailbox works but the list does not, use Verizon’s device-specific voicemail troubleshooter.
  • Another carrier or MVNO: First confirm that the exact plan and device support Visual Voicemail. Apple maintains a US carrier feature list, but the carrier controls plan eligibility and provisioning.

What to ask carrier support

Contact the new carrier if the new mailbox does not exist, callers cannot leave messages, or a working mailbox never appears in the visual list. Ask the representative to verify:

  1. Is the number transfer fully complete?
  2. Is a voicemail feature present on this line and plan?
  3. Is the mailbox attached to the transferred number rather than a temporary number?
  4. Can the mailbox and Visual Voicemail feature be reprovisioned?
  5. Is call forwarding correctly pointed to the carrier mailbox?
  6. Does this phone model support the carrier’s Visual Voicemail implementation?

Keep the exact error, time of the test call, caller number, whether basic mailbox access worked, and whether cellular data worked. Those facts separate a carrier mailbox failure from a display or notification problem.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my old voicemail messages disappear after switching carriers?

Voicemail is stored by the carrier, not transferred like photos or contacts. Do not assume saved messages, greetings, or passwords will move to the new mailbox. Save important messages before switching when the old carrier provides a supported export or sharing method.

Why can I call voicemail but not see messages in the Phone app?

That means the carrier mailbox may work while Visual Voicemail setup, data sync, plan provisioning, or phone software does not. Leave a new test message, restart, test the carrier data connection, and ask the carrier to reprovision Visual Voicemail if the list remains empty.

Is Live Voicemail the same as carrier Visual Voicemail?

No. Live Voicemail transcribes a call on the iPhone as it happens. Carrier Visual Voicemail displays messages stored by a supported wireless provider.

Should I reset the whole phone?

No. A factory reset cannot create a missing carrier mailbox. Confirm the number transfer and ask the carrier to provision voicemail first.

Can I use the old voicemail password?

Try only if the new carrier’s setup flow asks for it. A carrier switch may create a new mailbox that requires a new password and greeting.
