Internet Works Through Ethernet but Not Wi-Fi

A working Ethernet connection proves the ISP link is up. Check whether Wi-Fi is disabled, one device has a bad profile, or the router radio and DHCP failed.

If a device reaches the internet through Ethernet but not Wi-Fi from the same router, the ISP connection is working. Focus on the wireless radio, network name, saved Wi-Fi profile, or wireless address assignment.

Test two Wi-Fi devices

Leave the known-good Ethernet connection in place and try the same webpage from two wireless devices.

  • Only one Wi-Fi device fails: fix that device’s adapter, saved network, VPN, or IP settings.
  • Every Wi-Fi device fails: check the router’s wireless radio, SSID, DHCP, and recent configuration.
  • Devices connect near the router only: improve coverage, placement, or mesh backhaul.
  • Wi-Fi network is missing entirely: the radio may be disabled, hidden, or not broadcasting a compatible band.

This prevents a router factory reset for one laptop’s corrupted profile.

Forget and rejoin on one affected device

Choose the home network in the device’s Wi-Fi settings, select Forget, then reconnect with the current password. Disable Airplane Mode and confirm Wi-Fi is on.

Temporarily disable a third-party VPN or security filter. On Windows, use the built-in network troubleshooter and check that the Wi-Fi adapter is enabled. Obtain IP and DNS automatically unless the network intentionally uses static settings.

If the device works on another trusted Wi-Fi or phone hotspot, its radio works and the home-router relationship needs attention.

Verify the router is broadcasting Wi-Fi

Use the wired connection to sign in to the router’s official admin page or ISP app. Confirm:

  • Wi-Fi radio is enabled
  • the intended 2.4 GHz and/or 5 GHz network is enabled
  • Broadcast SSID is on unless you intentionally use a hidden network
  • security uses a mode supported by the devices
  • DHCP is enabled for the normal home network
  • access control or a device pause is not blocking the client

Restore any setting changed immediately before the failure. Do not disable the firewall or Wi-Fi encryption to make a device connect.

Restart the right equipment

Restart the router or gateway once and allow a full boot. In a separate modem-and-router setup, the modem is already proven online by Ethernet, but restart the router if its wireless service is stuck.

For mesh Wi-Fi, check whether the main unit is online and whether satellite nodes have a working backhaul. A device can join a nearby node whose link to the main router has failed.

Separate range from configuration

Test Wi-Fi a few feet from the main router. If it works there but not in the usual room, the problem is coverage or interference.

Place the router high and open, away from large metal objects, microwaves, and closed cabinets. Test 2.4 GHz for reach and 5 GHz for shorter-range capacity. Use a wired backhaul for mesh nodes when supported.

Reset network settings before the entire router

On a single affected device, use its network-settings reset only after forget/rejoin and updates. This can remove saved networks, VPN, and Bluetooth pairings depending on the platform.

A router factory reset is the last step. It erases the Wi-Fi name, password, ISP or bridge settings, port forwards, parental controls, and other configuration. Save a backup or screenshots and confirm the ISP credentials before resetting.

Does working Ethernet prove there is no ISP outage?

It proves the tested wired path currently reaches the internet. Wi-Fi can still fail independently inside the router or device.

Why can one phone use Wi-Fi but my laptop cannot?

The laptop may have a stale profile, disabled adapter, incompatible security mode, VPN, or incorrect IP/DNS configuration.

Why is the Wi-Fi name gone?

The radio or SSID broadcast may be disabled, the router may not have booted fully, or the device may not support the band being broadcast.

Should I turn off Wi-Fi security?

No. Use a compatible supported security mode, but do not leave the network open.

When should I replace the router?
