A fast-blinking red Service light points to a network service issue; check Smart Home Manager for an outage and reboot once. A slow-blinking red light means the gateway lacks a broadband connection; inspect the correct fiber or ONT cable. Solid red has separate overheating or hardware meanings.
The blink speed matters on an AT&T BGW320. AT&T assigns different meanings to a fast red blink, a slow red blink, and a solid red light. Watch the Service LED, not the separate WPS light, for a full cycle before acting.
Match the red pattern
According to AT&T’s current BGW320 device guide:
- Fast blinking red Service LED: a network service issue that may require AT&T intervention. It can be momentary.
- Slow blinking red Service LED: the gateway does not have a broadband connection; check for a loose, disconnected, or damaged incoming cable.
- Solid red with WPS light off: the gateway is overheating.
- Solid red with WPS light also solid red: a hardware issue; if a reboot does not correct it, replacement is needed.
- Fast blinking red WPS while Service is white: multiple devices attempted WPS pairing or the gateway is rebooting. This is not the same as a red Service LED.
This is why “red light” alone is not enough information for support.
For a fast red blink, check service first
Use cellular data to open AT&T Smart Home Manager or myAT&T and check for an outage at the service address. Leave the gateway powered if an outage is posted.
If no interruption appears, restart the gateway once through Smart Home Manager or disconnect power briefly, reconnect it, and wait for the full startup. A fast blink that returns needs AT&T remote diagnostics.
For a slow red blink, inspect the correct incoming cable
BGW320 installations vary:
- some connect directly to a fiber jack with a white cable and green ends
- others connect to an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) using a white Ethernet cable with red ends
Look at the existing installation before touching it. Make sure the cable has not been pulled loose, pinched, or sharply bent. AT&T notes that the red ONT Ethernet port is for the internet feed, not an ordinary device.
Fiber can be delicate. Do not stare into a disconnected fiber connector, bend it tightly, or clean it with household products. If the direct fiber lead is damaged or loose inside its module, contact AT&T.
Keep the gateway cool
For solid red with WPS off, place the BGW320 upright on a flat, hard surface with open space around and above it. Do not place it on carpet, inside a closed cabinet, or against a heat source. Let it cool before restarting.
If both Service and WPS remain solid red after a normal reboot, AT&T identifies that combination as a hardware issue that needs replacement.
Do not factory-reset too early
AT&T’s light guide mentions holding the rear red reset button for 10 seconds for a slow-red broadband failure. Before doing that:
- record custom Wi-Fi names and settings
- check the outage and incoming cable
- use Smart Home Manager diagnostics
- understand that a reset cannot restore a cut fiber or outside outage
If the gateway is managed by AT&T and the line still has no broadband connection, support can confirm whether a reset is appropriate.
What to report to AT&T
Provide the BGW320 model, Service and WPS light colors, blink speed, cable type (green fiber or red-ended ONT Ethernet), outage status, and time the problem began. Mention any recent equipment move or wall work.
That information separates an outside network issue, disconnected broadband feed, overheating gateway, and failed hardware.
Frequently asked questions
What does a fast-blinking red BGW320 light mean?
AT&T says the Service LED indicates a network service issue that may require AT&T intervention. Check Smart Home Manager for an outage and reboot once.
What does a slow-blinking red light mean?
The BGW320 does not have a broadband connection. Inspect the existing incoming fiber or ONT Ethernet cable for a loose or damaged connection.
Is a red WPS light the same problem?
No. A red WPS light with a white Service light concerns WPS pairing or startup, not necessarily the broadband feed.
Should I move the fiber cable?
Only confirm that the existing connection is secure. Do not sharply bend, modify, or clean the fiber; contact AT&T for a damaged connector or cable.
When does the gateway need replacement?
AT&T identifies solid red on both the Service and WPS lights as a hardware issue if a normal reboot does not clear it.
