Open Apple’s Camera app and test front and rear cameras separately. Remove the case or magnetic mount and clean the lens; a failure limited to one camera or visible shaking is useful service evidence.
A black preview in one social app does not prove the camera hardware failed. Start in Apple’s Camera app and test each camera and mode so you know whether the fault belongs to an app, one lens, the flash, or the whole device.
Test without accessories
Remove a case, lens cover, wallet, vehicle mount, or magnetic accessory. Clean the lens with a soft lint-free cloth and inspect for condensation or cracks. Switch between front and rear cameras, take a still photo, and record a short video. Keep an unedited sample that shows blur or shaking.
Test the flashlight from Control Center after the phone returns to a normal temperature. The flash may be unavailable while the device is hot. Do not cool an iPhone with ice or put it in a refrigerator.
Compare Camera with another app
Restart the iPhone and install a supported iOS update. If Apple’s Camera works but one app remains black, review that app’s camera permission under Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera, update the app, and contact its developer. Avoid deleting the app until its drafts or local media are backed up.
If only close subjects are blurry, move farther away and let the camera choose a lens; do not force focus by striking or shaking the phone. Persistent mechanical vibration, clicking, or one permanently black lens is a stronger hardware signal.
Decide when service is needed
Success is a stable preview and sharp saved image from both intended cameras. For support, record the iPhone model, iOS version, affected lens, modes, accessories removed, and whether the flash works. Apple can check service options when restart, updates, and accessory removal do not restore the camera. Do not send private photos as public troubleshooting evidence.
