Disconnect charging accessories, clean and dry the display, remove the case or protector, restart once, and test whether the same screen area still misses touches.
First determine whether one app is frozen or the same part of the display fails everywhere. Apple’s current order is to restart, make the screen clean and dry, disconnect accessories, remove a case or screen protector, and arrange service if the problem remains.
Stop if the display is lifting or the phone is dangerously hot
A raised display, odor, smoke, or unusual heat can indicate physical damage. Unplug power, do not press the screen back into place, and contact Apple or an authorized service provider. A passcode problem is not a reason to erase a phone before checking its backup.
Test in a controlled state
- Unplug Lightning or USB-C cables, headphones, hubs, and the charger. If touch works only while unplugged, test a different outlet, cable, and charger.
- Wipe moisture and debris with a soft lint-free cloth and let the display dry.
- Remove a tight case and any cracked, bubbling, or edge-lifted protector.
- Perform the model-specific restart once. Do not repeatedly interrupt an iOS installation bar that is still moving.
- Test several built-in screens. A single app failure points toward the app; a fixed dead strip across Settings, the keyboard, and the Home Screen points toward the display.
When service is the next safe step
If a corner never registers, touches happen without a finger, or the issue returns with every accessory removed, stop changing unrelated settings. Record whether there was a drop, liquid exposure, recent repair, or charging connection. Apple’s support article states that service may be needed when the screen continues to respond intermittently or too sensitively.
What counts as resolved
The entire display should register deliberate taps and swipes repeatedly while the phone is unplugged and in its normal case. A temporary response after squeezing or twisting the phone is not a repair. Keep an updated backup before any service appointment.
