Open Know your options beneath the PayPal balance before promising a release date. Shipped goods use approved-carrier tracking; services and virtual products use an honest Completed status only after fulfillment. Some holds can remain for up to 21 days.
A PayPal hold is not the same as a buyer’s pending payment or a refund moving back to a bank. Sign in directly at PayPal, look beneath the PayPal balance for Know your options, and open the held transaction. That page tells you why the money is being held and whether PayPal offers an action that may release this particular payment sooner.
Identify why this payment is held
PayPal lists several account-activity reasons: a new seller account, a return after a long break from selling, buyer reports or refunds, an unusual change in sales volume or item type, higher-risk goods, or unfinished identity verification. A goods-and-services payment can also be held when the sender selected that payment type.
Save the transaction ID, amount, buyer name, transaction date, stated hold reason, and the date PayPal currently expects the funds to become available. If identity verification is requested, complete it only inside the signed-in PayPal account. Do not send identity documents in response to an email or direct message.
The key decision is what you actually sold:
- A physical product that was shipped: use valid tracking from the carrier that has the parcel.
- A service or virtual product: update the order status only after the promised work or digital delivery is complete.
- Nothing was sold or the payment is unfamiliar: do not fabricate fulfillment to release it; use PayPal support or the Resolution Center to investigate the transaction.
For shipped goods, add the real carrier record
Open Activity, select the transaction, and choose Get your money. Select the product path and add the tracking information, or use a PayPal shipping label. PayPal says eligible holds may be released approximately 24 hours after an approved carrier confirms delivery to the buyer’s address.
The useful checkpoint is not merely that you typed a number. Reopen the transaction and verify that the tracking number and carrier appear correctly, then use the carrier’s official site to confirm that the number belongs to this shipment. Preserve the acceptance receipt and delivery scan. Never reuse tracking from another order or mark an unshipped item delivered.
For a service or virtual item, use the order-status path
From Activity, open the payment, choose Get your money, select Service or virtual product, and set the order status to Completed only when fulfillment is complete. PayPal says the hold is released seven days after that confirmation for eligible payments. The available order statuses include Completed, Pending, and Canceled; choose the one that matches reality, then select Submit.
Keep the contract or order description and dated proof that the service or digital item was delivered. Do not label unfinished work Completed just to start the seven-day period. A false status can undermine the transaction record if the buyer later raises a problem.
Know when to stop waiting and contact PayPal
After submitting tracking or status, the payment is complete when the transaction no longer shows the hold and the amount is available in the PayPal balance. Capture the updated transaction status and availability date; a carrier’s delivery scan alone does not prove PayPal released the money.
PayPal warns that, in rare cases, it can continue to hold a payment for up to 21 days even after the release steps, including when selling patterns change unusually. If Know your options offers no applicable action, the carrier shows delivery but PayPal does not update after its stated processing period, or the displayed availability date passes, use PayPal’s Message Center or support route. Give the transaction ID, hold reason, tracking or submitted order status, carrier delivery time, and screenshots of the signed-in status. Keep the support case number and never share a password or one-time security code.
