Open the pending payment in your Transactions feed. If it shows an estimated bank-completion date, it generally cannot be expedited. If it was sent to an unverified phone or email, the recipient can verify it or you can use Take Back. Do not send a duplicate.
Venmo uses “Pending” for more than one process. Open the payment in the Transactions feed before trying to cancel it. A bank-funded personal payment, an unclaimed payment, and a merchant authorization have different rules.
Identify the pending type
For a personal payment, Venmo lists two main causes:
- Bank clearance: certain bank-funded payments take additional time and show an estimated completion date.
- Recipient action: the payment went to a phone number or email that is unverified or not associated with an active Venmo account.
A pending purchase from a business or Venmo Debit Card is usually a merchant authorization instead. Do not apply the personal-payment Take Back steps to a merchant hold.
If the bank is still clearing the payment
Venmo says certain bank-funded personal payments typically take 3–5 business days. The transaction feed shows an estimated completion date, and there is no way to speed it up.
Do not send the recipient a second payment. If you must stop a bank-funded payment sent to an active Venmo account, Venmo directs users to contact their bank; stopping it may not be possible and can create a negative Venmo balance or account restriction. Ask both the bank and Venmo about consequences first.
If the recipient has not claimed it
Confirm that you used the intended phone number or email. The recipient can add and verify that exact contact information on their Venmo account.
If you want to cancel an unclaimed payment:
- Open the Me tab.
- Find the payment in Transactions.
- Tap Take Back.
Venmo says Take Back appears only when the destination is not associated with an active account. If an unclaimed payment is neither claimed nor taken back, Venmo says it automatically expires after 30 days.
Understand the return time
After Take Back, Venmo’s current guidance says:
- Venmo balance returns should appear right away
- bank-account returns can take up to five business days
- credit- or debit-card returns can take up to seven business days
External processing can affect timing. Save the canceled transaction and original funding source before contacting support.
If it is a merchant authorization
An authorization temporarily reserves funds until the merchant captures or voids the purchase. Venmo says many merchants capture in one to five days, but some may take up to 30 days.
Contact the merchant about the order first. Venmo must generally allow the merchant time to finish or void the authorization. Hotels and rental-car companies can hold funds longer than ordinary retail purchases.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel every pending Venmo payment?
No. Take Back is for an unclaimed phone/email payment. A bank-clearing payment to an active account has a different process.
Can Venmo speed up a bank-pending payment?
Venmo says no. Check the estimated completion date in the Transactions feed.
Should I send the recipient again?
No. The first payment may still complete, causing a duplicate.
Why was my payment method charged if the recipient has not claimed it?
Venmo says an unclaimed payment can still charge the funding method while the recipient verifies the phone or email.
Is a pending store purchase the same?
No. It is commonly a merchant authorization that remains until capture or release.
