An HDCP error points to the HDMI copy-protection handshake between the Roku player and the display path. Power down and reseat the whole chain first, then test a different input, a short known-good cable, and a direct Roku-to-TV connection before checking display compatibility.
A Roku HDCP Error Detected message or purple screen is an HDMI-path problem, not proof that the internet is down. HDCP is the content-protection handshake among the Roku player, TV, and any receiver, HDMI switch, or soundbar in between. For 4K UHD or HDR playback, that path must support HDCP 2.2.
Do not install an “HDCP remover” or try to bypass copy protection. The safe diagnosis is to simplify the physical chain until you identify the cable, input, intermediary, or display mode that cannot complete the handshake.
First determine whether all content or only 4K/HDR fails
Try one ordinary HD title and one title that triggers the error, without changing several settings at once.
- Every title produces the error or purple screen: begin with the complete HDMI reseat below.
- Only 4K UHD or HDR content fails: check that the Roku model, chosen TV input, receiver or soundbar, and cables all meet the relevant 4K/HDR and HDCP 2.2 requirements.
- The message appears on a computer using The Roku Channel and an external monitor: test the computer’s built-in screen first. That is a separate monitor-path branch.
Record the Roku model, TV input number, whether an AVR or soundbar is in the path, and the display mode in Settings > Display type. A photo of the exact message is more useful than “Roku went purple.”
Rebuild the HDMI handshake from a powered-off state
Roku’s official sequence disconnects signal and power before reconnecting either:
- Unplug both ends of the HDMI cable—from the Roku player and from the TV, receiver, or soundbar.
- Power off the TV and any AVR or soundbar, then unplug their power cords.
- Disconnect power from the Roku player.
- Reconnect both HDMI ends firmly.
- Reconnect power to the display path and Roku, and wait for every component to start.
- Play the same title again.
Stop if the title plays with normal color and the HDCP message does not return. Note that the full reseat fixed it; that result identifies a failed handshake rather than a bandwidth problem.
Isolate one link at a time
If the error returns, keep the test title constant and change only one part per attempt:
- Move the cable to a different HDMI input on the TV, AVR, or soundbar.
- Substitute a known-good HDMI cable. Roku recommends one under six feet if available for this diagnostic test.
- If an HDMI switch, AVR, or soundbar sits between player and TV, connect the Roku directly to the TV.
- Try another HDCP-compatible TV or monitor if one is available.
- On Roku, test a different supported choice under Settings > Display type.
A direct connection that works while the original chain fails points to the removed intermediary, its selected input, or its cable. Do not assume that every HDMI switch supports HDCP, and do not replace the Roku before isolating the chain.
Treat a 4K/HDR-only failure as a compatibility boundary
When standard HD plays but 4K or HDR fails, compare the manuals for the exact TV input and every intermediary. Some displays support the needed mode on only certain HDMI inputs, and the complete path—not just the TV—must support the required protection and video format.
Keep the working display type while you verify compatibility. Forcing a mode that repeatedly produces a purple screen is not a successful fix. Completion means the chosen content plays at the intended mode without an HDCP message after a fresh start.
Escalate with a map of the tested chain
If direct Roku-to-TV playback fails on a known-good short cable and another compatible input, use Roku’s official support chat. Provide the Roku model, TV make and model, software version, display type, title format, inputs and cables tested, and whether another HDCP-capable display changed the result.
If direct playback works but adding a receiver, soundbar, switch, or monitor restores the error, contact that component’s manufacturer instead. Give it the same chain map and ask whether the exact input and firmware support HDCP or HDCP 2.2 for the requested format. Preserve support case numbers and test results; never present a protection-bypass device as the fallback.
