For Bluetooth headphones used through Roku mobile Headphone Mode, update the app and run Remote > Controls > Adjust audio delay. Fine-tune with Advanced adjustment only if calibration leaves a mismatch; investigate pairing or network traffic if sync will not remain stable.
If speech reaches the headphones before or after the actor’s mouth moves, use Roku’s delay calibration before rebooting the router. The current Adjust audio delay control applies to Bluetooth headphones used through Headphone Mode in the Roku mobile app. A remote’s wired headphone jack, direct Bluetooth connection to a supported Roku, and mobile Headphone Mode are different paths and should not be diagnosed as one.
Start with the same short scene after every change. A scene with clear dialogue and visible speech gives better completion evidence than a menu sound.
Verify which Headphone Mode path is active
In the Roku mobile app, open Devices and confirm that it is connected to the intended Roku. Then open Remote and look for the headphone icon.
- The icon is present and Bluetooth headphones are paired to the phone or tablet: use the mobile delay calibration below.
- The icon is missing: update the Roku mobile app. If it still does not appear, Roku says that Roku device does not support mobile Headphone Mode.
- Headphones are plugged into a Roku voice remote: mobile and remote Headphone Mode cannot be active at the same time. Diagnose the remote path instead of calibrating the app.
- A Streambar or smart soundbar is playing an external game console, disc player, or cable box: Roku does not support Headphone Mode for that external-source path.
Save the Roku model, mobile app version, phone model, headphone model, and which connection path you confirmed. That prevents support from applying the mobile calibration to unsupported hardware.
Run Roku’s audio-delay calibration
Install the latest Roku mobile app, keep the phone and Roku on the same home network, and connect the Bluetooth headphones to the phone or tablet. Then:
- Open the Roku mobile app.
- Tap Remote in the navigation bar.
- Tap the Headphone icon to activate Headphone Mode.
- Tap the Gear icon to open Controls.
- Choose Adjust audio delay.
- Tap Get started and complete the on-screen calibration.
Replay the same dialogue scene. If picture and speech now stay aligned for several minutes, stop. Record that normal calibration corrected it.
If a mismatch remains, repeat through Adjust audio delay, then choose Advanced adjustment and use the slider for fine control. Make a small change, replay the same scene, and stop when the match is stable. Moving the slider from end to end without a comparison point makes the result harder to judge.
Separate a fixed delay from unstable audio
A constant lip-sync offset belongs in the delay control. Audio that drops, pops, stutters, or gradually moves in and out of sync points elsewhere.
For unstable mobile Headphone Mode, confirm that the headphones work normally with another app on the same phone. Re-pair them if needed, then turn Headphone Mode off and on. If that fails, close and reopen the Roku app. Roku’s next device step is to unplug the Roku power cable briefly and reconnect it.
Do not confuse the normal playback restart that occurs when Headphone Mode is activated with a fault. Roku explains that video can stop and restart so audio and video can synchronize. Activating Headphone Mode before starting the title avoids that initial interruption.
Check the wireless path only when sync will not stay fixed
Mobile Headphone Mode sends audio over the same home network used by other devices. Pause large downloads and other streams for one controlled test. If the audio becomes stable, preserve the before-and-after result instead of repeatedly recalibrating delay.
If problems continue, unplug the Roku. Restart the router by disconnecting its power for 10 seconds and reconnecting it, unless the ISP or manufacturer specifies another restart procedure. Wait for the network to return, reconnect Roku power, and test again. Do not press a factory-reset button.
Advanced router changes are not the first fallback. Roku limits its 5 GHz and Wi-Fi Multimedia suggestions to people comfortable managing network equipment; use the router manufacturer or ISP when those settings are unfamiliar.
The issue is resolved when the same dialogue scene remains synchronized without drops during normal viewing. If calibration, re-pairing, app restart, Roku restart, and the controlled network test do not produce a stable result, use Roku’s official support chat. Provide the saved models and versions, connection path, calibration result, Advanced adjustment position, and whether pausing network traffic changed the symptom. Never send a Wi-Fi password or Roku account password in a chat transcript.
