Open Zelle inside your bank app and check whether the payment is pending or completed. Confirm the recipient enrolled the exact email address, U.S. mobile number, or Zelle tag you used. Do not send a duplicate. If a completed payment is missing, both parties should contact their own banks with the transaction details.
Do not send the payment a second time. First open Zelle through the bank or credit union app used to send it and check the transaction’s actual status and destination. A recipient’s screenshot or text message is not enough to prove where the bank routed the money.
Read the status in the sending bank
- Pending or recipient not enrolled: the recipient may need to enroll the exact email address or U.S. mobile number used.
- Completed: the sending bank treats the transfer as delivered to the enrolled destination; both banks may need to trace it.
- Failed or canceled: follow the bank’s displayed return timing before attempting another payment.
Zelle says transfers between enrolled consumers typically occur within minutes, but the participating financial institution controls the specific transaction and limits.
Compare the exact destination
Ask the recipient to open Zelle inside their bank app and check which email, U.S. mobile number, or Zelle tag is enrolled. Compare it character by character with the destination in your transaction details.
The recipient should also check every eligible bank account where that contact information may have been enrolled. Zelle payments go directly to the bank account associated with the enrolled profile; they do not wait in a general Zelle wallet.
Do not ask the recipient to send you passwords, one-time codes, full account numbers, or screenshots containing sensitive information.
Handle a pending unenrolled payment
If you used the correct contact information and the recipient has not enrolled it, they can follow the official Zelle notification and enroll through their bank. They should independently open the bank app rather than trusting a link in a forwarded message.
Zelle says cancellation is available only when the recipient has not yet enrolled. In the sender’s Activity page, choose the payment and look for Cancel This Payment. If that option is absent, contact the sending bank before doing anything else.
Trace a completed payment
For a completed payment that the correct recipient cannot locate:
- Sender contacts the sending bank’s fraud/payments support.
- Recipient contacts the receiving bank where the destination is enrolled.
- Both provide the date, amount, masked destination, recipient name shown before sending, and transaction/reference number.
- Ask each bank to open or trace the transaction and give a case number.
Zelle is offered through financial institutions, so the bank that provides your Zelle experience is the primary support channel for account-specific transactions.
If fraud or the wrong person may be involved
If the payment details show an unfamiliar recipient, contact the bank immediately. Explain whether you authorized the transfer yourself or did not authorize it; those are different claim types.
Do not pay anyone who promises to “release” the Zelle payment, upgrade an account, or refund it after you send a fee. Zelle does not require a recipient to pay you before receiving an ordinary transfer.
Frequently asked questions
Should I resend a Zelle payment that has not appeared?
No. Verify the status and destination with the sending bank first. A second payment can produce a duplicate loss.
Where does received Zelle money go?
Directly to the bank account associated with the recipient’s enrolled email, U.S. mobile number, or Zelle tag.
Can I cancel a pending Zelle payment?
Only when the recipient has not yet enrolled, according to Zelle. Look for Cancel This Payment in Activity or contact your bank.
Who investigates a completed missing payment?
The sender should contact the sending bank, and the recipient should contact the bank where the destination is enrolled.
Does a screenshot prove the recipient did not get it?
No. Use transaction records and bank case numbers. Screenshots can omit accounts, be outdated, or be altered.
