App Store says Verification Required for free apps: check the bill

Find the unpaid Apple order behind a Verification Required message, check what will be charged, and verify the result before retrying a free app download.

Quick answer

Check Apple purchase history before adding money or replacing a card. A free download can be blocked by an older unpaid order; identify that order and the account or family purchase behind it before authorizing payment.

Check the unpaid order before changing payment details. Apple’s guidance connects “Verification Required” and “billing problem with a previous purchase” messages to an unpaid balance. Even free downloads can be blocked. Paying that balance concerns an earlier order; it does not mean the free app acquired a price.

Identify the purchase and the Apple Account

On iPhone, open Settings → your name → Media & Purchases → View Account → Purchase History. Apple’s unpaid-order instructions identify an order marked in red Amount You Owe. Record its item, date, and amount before deciding how to pay.

You can also review purchases at reportaproblem.apple.com. Search by the amount if needed. On current App Store versions, your profile also offers Apps & Purchase History → Purchase History; adjust the Last 90 days filter for older items.

If an item is missing, check whether another Apple Account made the purchase. A statement total may combine several items. Use Apple’s receipt and purchase details to separate them rather than assuming the most recently downloaded app caused the bill.

Resolve an unfamiliar charge before authorizing another attempt

Check whether a family member recognizes the order. With purchase sharing enabled, the organizer’s payment method is charged unless the purchasing family member has a valid payment method. Discuss the affected order with the organizer rather than repeatedly substituting someone else’s card.

If nobody recognizes the purchase, follow Apple’s apple.com/bill support path. Do not send a password, verification code, full card number, or an unredacted purchase-history screen to a community commenter. An unresolved account charge belongs with Apple Support.

Choose a payment route only after checking the amount

If the debt is recognized and you choose to pay it, Apple’s current options include:

  • Retry the current method: Settings → your name → Payment & Shipping → Fix Payment Information → Try Again.
  • Replace the payment method: Apple says the newly added method is charged automatically. Review the debt first; adding a card is not merely a test.
  • Use redeemed Apple Account credit: open the unpaid order and choose Pay with Apple Account Credit. Use the applicable US Apple gift-card/account balance route, not instructions from someone offering to “unlock” the account.

For a declined card, check the billing name and address against the financial institution’s records. Ask the issuer about the decline or required verification. Apple says it does not know why the institution declined the payment. Do not repeatedly authorize attempts while the account or amount is unclear.

Confirm both the bill and the download result

Recheck the order in the same account, then retry the intended free app. Confirm it installs or updates; entering payment information alone is not proof that either problem is resolved. If the debt is settled but the download still fails, give Apple Support the exact message, order details, and steps tried.

Canceling a subscription and requesting a refund are separate tasks. Apple’s refund guidance says an unpaid order must be paid before a refund request; eligibility is not guaranteed. If the charge itself is disputed or the payment route remains blocked, contact Apple through its official support pages before taking further action.
