How to Cancel a Subscription Before the Next Charge

Find out who bills you, cancel in the right place, and keep proof that the renewal was stopped.

Quick answer

Check your receipt or card statement first. Cancel through Apple, Google Play, or the company that actually bills you, then save the confirmation and verify the subscription shows an end date or canceled status.

The fastest cancellation route depends on who processes the payment, not which app or service you use. Start with the latest receipt or the exact merchant name on your card statement. That tells you whether to cancel with Apple, Google Play, or the service itself.

Identify who bills you

Search your email for the service name plus words such as receipt, subscription, renewal, or invoice. Then compare the result with your bank or credit card statement.

  • A receipt from Apple means the subscription is usually managed through your Apple Account.
  • A Google Play receipt means it is managed through the Google Account used for that purchase.
  • A receipt from the service itself means you should sign in on that company’s website or contact its billing support.

Do not assume deleting an app cancels its subscription. Google explicitly says that uninstalling an app does not cancel the subscription.

Cancel a subscription billed by Apple

On an iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Select the subscription.
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription and follow the confirmation steps.

Apple says a missing Cancel button or a red expiration message can mean the subscription is already canceled. If the subscription is not listed, search your email for an Apple receipt and confirm which Apple Account made the purchase. A charge without an Apple receipt may come from another company.

Cancel a subscription billed by Google Play

On an Android device:

  1. Open your subscriptions in Google Play.
  2. Confirm that you are signed in to the Google Account used for the purchase.
  3. Select the subscription.
  4. Tap Cancel subscription.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Google says access normally continues for the time already paid after you stop renewal. Refund eligibility is a separate question and follows Google’s refund policy or the app developer’s policy.

Cancel a subscription billed directly

Sign in to the company’s website and look for Account, Plan, Billing, or Subscription. Complete every confirmation screen. If the site does not offer a working cancellation path:

  1. Contact the company’s billing support in writing.
  2. State the account email, subscription name, and that you want future renewal stopped.
  3. Save the message, case number, chat transcript, or screenshot.

Do not send a full card number, password, or one-time security code in an email or support chat.

Confirm the cancellation worked

Before closing the page, look for an expiration date, Canceled status, or a message confirming that renewal is off. Save that screen and the confirmation email.

Check the next card or bank statement. The Federal Trade Commission recommends keeping a copy of the cancellation request and watching for later charges. If a company keeps charging after you tried to cancel, contact the company first and then ask your card issuer about its dispute process if the charge is not resolved.

Frequently asked questions

Does deleting the app cancel the subscription?

No. Deleting an app does not normally stop a subscription. Cancel through the store or company that processes the payment.

Is canceling the same as getting a refund?

No. Cancellation normally stops a future renewal. A refund asks for money from a charge that already happened and follows a separate policy.

What if I cannot find the subscription?

Check the receipt and card statement for the billing company, then verify that you are using the same Apple Account, Google Account, or service account used for the purchase.
