Try two devices on the same Xfinity Wi-Fi. If both fail, check the Xfinity Status Center and gateway cables before restarting the gateway once. If only one device fails, forget and rejoin Wi-Fi on that device. Do not factory-reset the gateway before checking an outage or account issue.
“Connected” means your phone or computer joined the Xfinity Wi-Fi network. It does not prove the gateway has a working connection to Xfinity. Test the two links separately before resetting anything.
Check whether one device or the whole home is affected
On the same Wi-Fi network, open a new webpage on two different devices.
- Only one device fails: forget the Wi-Fi network on that device, rejoin with the password, disable its VPN temporarily, and restart it.
- Every device fails: check Xfinity service, the gateway, and its incoming cable.
- Ethernet works but Wi-Fi fails: go to the Ethernet-versus-Wi-Fi checklist.
- Only one app or site fails: the home connection is probably working; check that service or its DNS/VPN path.
Use cellular data to save instructions before disconnecting network equipment.
Check the Xfinity Status Center
Sign in to the Xfinity app or official Status Center with mobile data. Look for an interruption at the service address and any estimated restoration time.
An outage cannot be fixed with a Wi-Fi password change or factory reset. If an outage is posted, leave the gateway powered and wait for Xfinity’s update unless the status page gives different instructions.
Also check that the account is active and that a new or replacement gateway has completed activation.
Inspect the gateway connection
Check the gateway without loosening unrelated wiring:
- Confirm its power adapter is firmly connected to the gateway and a working outlet.
- Hand-tighten the coaxial cable at the wall and gateway.
- If there is an accessible splitter, make sure its connections are secure.
- Look for a damaged, sharply bent, or crushed coaxial cable.
Do not open an outdoor cable box or remove a required amplifier. Note the gateway light pattern and the time the failure began; that evidence helps Xfinity identify line problems.
Restart once and wait for a full startup
Use the Xfinity app’s restart option when it is available. Otherwise, unplug the gateway’s power, wait about one minute, reconnect it, and allow the startup to finish. Cable gateways can take several minutes to come fully online.
Do not unplug and reconnect it repeatedly. A restart interrupts remote diagnostics and cannot repair a damaged coax line.
When the gateway settles, test a webpage on one wired device if possible and one Wi-Fi device. This tells you whether the internet feed or just wireless service failed.
Keep a personal router in the right place
If you use a separate router, the path is normally:
wall coax → Xfinity modem/gateway → Ethernet → personal router → devices
Wait for the Xfinity equipment to come online before restarting the personal router. Check the Ethernet cable between them. If a computer works directly from the active gateway port but devices behind the router do not, troubleshoot the personal router.
Avoid changing bridge mode, DHCP, or MAC-cloning settings unless you understand the existing setup. Those changes can create a second failure.
When to contact Xfinity
Contact Xfinity when:
- all devices fail after one completed restart
- the gateway never returns to its normal online state
- the coax is secure but the connection repeatedly drops
- the Status Center shows no outage but remote troubleshooting cannot reach the gateway
- service stopped after a move, plan change, or equipment replacement
Ask whether the gateway is online in Xfinity’s system and whether the line shows signal errors. Do not factory-reset leased equipment unless Xfinity directs you; it can erase Wi-Fi customization without fixing the outside line.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my phone say connected when Xfinity is down?
The phone is connected to the gateway’s local Wi-Fi radio. The gateway’s separate link to Xfinity can still be offline.
Should I restart the gateway during an outage?
Check the Status Center first. One restart is reasonable if no outage is listed, but repeated restarts will not restore an area interruption.
Why does only one device have no internet?
That usually points to the device’s saved Wi-Fi profile, VPN, DNS, or network settings rather than the Xfinity line.
Should I press the reset button?
Not as a first step. A factory reset can erase network names and settings. Check status, cables, and a normal restart first.
What information should I give support?
Provide the service address, gateway model, light pattern, failure time, devices tested, whether Ethernet works, and the result of one completed restart.
