iPhone Face ID not working: restore recognition without weakening security

Check supported settings, uncover the TrueDepth camera, use the expected orientation and distance, add an alternate appearance when appropriate, then reset Face ID.

Quick answer

Uncover and clean the TrueDepth camera, confirm Face ID is enabled for the failed feature, and retry at a normal viewing distance. Reset Face ID only after those checks; repeated “Face ID is not available” errors need Apple diagnosis.

Face ID may fail because the TrueDepth camera is covered, the requested feature is disabled, your face is partly hidden, or iOS requires the passcode by design. Do not remove the passcode or hand another person your device to “fix” biometric security.

Identify a normal passcode request

An iPhone intentionally asks for the passcode after restart and in other security conditions. Enter your own passcode once, then lock and wake the phone for a fresh Face ID test. In Settings > Face ID & Passcode, confirm that iPhone Unlock and the particular app or purchase feature are enabled.

Check whether the model supports Face ID in the orientation being used. Hold the device at a normal viewing distance and place your full eyes, nose, and mouth in view. Masks, some sunglasses, and face coverings can change the result depending on the configured options.

Clear the TrueDepth camera area

Remove a case or screen protector that overlaps the top sensor area. Wipe the front glass with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Do not use tools in the sensor opening. If the display or front-camera assembly was recently repaired, mention that history to Apple; do not follow software instructions that claim to pair unauthorized biometric components.

Re-enroll only after simple checks

Install the current iOS update and restart. If your appearance varies substantially, Apple provides Set Up an Alternate Appearance. Otherwise select Reset Face ID, then enroll again while moving your head slowly inside the frame. Keep the passcode private during enrollment.

Stop at a repeated availability error

Success is several unlocks in ordinary lighting plus the affected app or purchase working again. If setup cannot start, “Face ID is not available” keeps returning, or the front camera also fails, contact Apple with the exact message, model, iOS version, and repair or impact history. Face ID has no safe third-party bypass; use the passcode and official service path.
