Roku volume works but Home and arrows do not: restore the remote link

Separate TV volume from Roku navigation, identify a voice or simple remote, and use the correct restart and pairing sequence before replacing anything.

Quick answer

A working TV volume button does not prove that a Roku voice remote is paired to the player. Check for a voice button first, then restart the remote and put both it and the Roku into pairing mode. Use the official phone app only if Roku is already on the same Wi-Fi.

If a Roku remote changes the TV volume but Home and the arrows do nothing, check the Roku control link before repeating TV-control setup. A voice remote can operate the television separately from its wireless connection to the Roku player. Volume working by itself is therefore not a pairing test.

First make sure the TV is displaying the Roku screen. A TV menu or a different HDMI input can make a working remote look unresponsive. This guide concerns Roku navigation; it does not diagnose missing sound or a streaming-service outage.

Check for a voice button before trying to pair

Look near the directional pad for a microphone or magnifying-glass button. Roku uses that button to distinguish a voice remote from a simple remote. Do not identify the type from volume buttons alone: a simple remote supplied with a Roku TV can have TV controls too.

Remote you have What to check
Voice button present Power, remote restart, then wireless pairing
No voice button Clear infrared path to the Roku device and a fresh matching battery pair
Roku Touch tabletop remote Use Roku’s separate Touch instructions; the handheld steps below are not its setup guide

A simple remote does not need the voice-remote pairing sequence. Remove an obstruction in front of the receiver and point toward it. If only some buttons still fail, use the simple-remote branch in Roku’s official troubleshooting page rather than holding unrelated button combinations.

Restart the voice remote according to its power source

For a battery-powered voice remote, take out both batteries, press any two buttons, and put the batteries back with the negative ends first. Use a fresh matching pair if power is uncertain.

For a rechargeable voice remote, Roku specifies a 20-second remote restart: hold its pairing button if it has one, or hold Back + Home if it does not. Wait for the light to stop flashing. Recharge it if needed; the current troubleshooting page calls for at least five hours when fully charging this type.

The 20-second restart and the five-second pairing step below are different operations. Repeating the restart without putting the Roku device into pairing mode can leave the original connection problem unresolved.

If the remote is unusually hot, stop using it. Leave it on a hard, nonflammable surface and do not handle hot batteries. Contact Roku if it does not cool down.

Put both ends into pairing mode

You need the Roku player or TV to be ready as well as the remote.

If another remote or the official phone app still controls Roku, open Settings > Remotes & devices > Add devices > Remote > Continue. Otherwise, disconnect the Roku’s power, wait at least five seconds, reconnect it, and wait for the Roku Home screen.

Then start pairing on the handheld voice remote:

  1. With a pairing button on the back or under the battery cover, hold that button for five seconds.
  2. Without that button, hold Back + Home for five seconds instead.
  3. Look for a flashing status light, then the on-screen pairing result.

After a successful connection, move the highlight with the arrows, open an item, and return with Home. A flashing light alone is not proof that navigation has returned. If pairing fails, check that both ends were ready at the same time and try again nearby.

Use the phone app only when its connection is available

Roku’s official app discovers devices on the same Wi-Fi network. Select the intended device before using its remote controls. This can restore screen access while you reconnect a physical voice remote.

It is not a guaranteed rescue for a Roku that is offline or has never joined the current network. Roku’s remote troubleshooting page says a remote is needed to connect the device to Wi-Fi. Do not factory-reset a previously connected player just to test the app and then assume the phone can complete setup.

Use Roku’s own app rather than an unfamiliar remote app that asks for unrelated access. This procedure does not require making mobile-app control permissive or weakening network settings.

If navigation still does not return

For a Streaming Stick model with a wireless receiver built into its supplied USB power cable, check that this receiver is still present. A different power cable is not necessarily a substitute. Also note whether moving the remote close to the Roku changes the result.

Use the support chat on the official Roku troubleshooting page if fresh power, the correct remote restart, and simultaneous pairing still fail. Give the player and remote models, whether a voice button exists, the light’s behavior, and which buttons work. Those results help distinguish a failed control link from individual damaged buttons. They do not establish that buying a replacement is the only solution.
