YouTube Premium downloads missing: check the device and account

Missing YouTube downloads on Android? Separate a new phone, the wrong Premium account, expired access, and a title removed at sync before deleting app data.

Quick answer

Start on the device that downloaded the video and check the Premium account. Downloads do not transfer to a new phone. Reconnect to refresh offline availability, then verify one eligible title plays before relying on it for travel.

A missing YouTube download is not automatically lost account data. First check which phone saved it and which account is open. Offline videos stay with the device that downloaded them; signing into the same account on a replacement phone does not bring those files across.

This guide is for a United States YouTube Premium member using the Android YouTube app. It addresses saved video availability, rather than canceling a subscription or exporting a video file. Do not clear app storage or delete every download as the first diagnostic step.

Match the disappearance to a specific change

What changed? First check
You moved to a new phone Download the needed titles on that phone while online
You switched Google accounts Open the account that has the Premium membership
Membership access stopped or recently resumed Review the membership status and the saved-video retry option
A long offline period ended Reconnect and let YouTube check title availability
One title disappeared while others work Check whether that title still offers an offline option

Keep the affected title or video link and the message shown in the app. A missing list, a title that refuses to play, and a new download error are different observations. That distinction prevents changing subscription or device settings that do not address the symptom.

Check the original device before starting over

On the phone used for the download, open YouTube under the intended account and look for Downloads. The current Android guide describes the Downloaded filter at the top of the Library, or the Downloads playlist under Recents. Open the saved title itself rather than relying on a thumbnail elsewhere in the app.

If the old phone still has playable copies, leave them alone until the replacement is ready. YouTube’s downloaded-video troubleshooting says a new device needs its own downloads. Account sign-in and copying ordinary phone files are not a transfer of YouTube offline viewing rights.

Confirm access without buying another membership

In the Android app, review profile photo → Settings → Purchases and memberships and check the account associated with Premium. An expired membership no longer provides access to downloaded videos. An unexpected result is a reason to check the receipt and account, not immediately purchase a second plan.

If access recently lapsed and you already resubscribed, YouTube says saved videos may take a few hours to appear. Its documented immediate option is Menu → Retry download for a video you need now. This is conditional guidance for an existing resubscription, not a recommendation to pay again or a promise that every title will return.

Reconnect, then check whether the title is still eligible

YouTube’s offline-viewing guide currently says downloads can play offline for up to 29 days, with a shorter 48-hour window in some countries or regions. Reconnection allows the app to check changes to a video’s availability. A title that is no longer available offline is removed at the next sync; reconnecting cannot guarantee restoration.

While online, open the original video and see whether Download is available. If it is, download that title again and wait for completion. If the option is absent for that video, stop trying file extractors or DRM workarounds. Use permitted online viewing when available, or choose another eligible title before travel. United States membership availability does not establish the rules for a different country you are visiting; review YouTube’s travel policy for that situation.

Prove one video is ready before leaving Wi-Fi

Choose one needed, eligible video on the current phone. Let its download finish, find it in Downloads, and check playback with the network temporarily disconnected. Restore the connection afterward. A thumbnail or a download still in progress does not establish that offline playback works.

If a fresh download fails, use the download-error guide for that new message. Check the connection and mobile-data restrictions before spending money on more data or changing a plan. A device-limit message needs its own documented limit check; it does not mean all saved videos should be deleted.

If the right account and device still cannot play the title, close and reopen YouTube, then restart the device as the playback guide recommends. For a persistent failure, follow Contact support in that guide. Keep the exact error, where it appears, the affected video link, device, and whether the single-video retry worked. Hide account and payment details in anything posted publicly. Send feedback is a separate product-feedback route and does not promise a reply or a recovered download.
